Sofonisba Anguissola (also spelled Anguisciola; c. 1532 - 1625) was an Italian painter of the Renaissance. After her initial training, she met Michelangelo while in Rome when she was 23. He recognized her talent and afterwards informally trained her.

The son of a goldsmith, Bernardino Campi began his artistic training in his native Cremona. Period sources indicate that he was an active portraitist in the major capitals of northern Italy, but few of these likenesses survive and almost none of their sitters have been identified with any certainty.

The 50 or so securely attributed paintings and drawings of hers, of which at least 13 are self-portraits, include Bernardino Campi Painting Sofonisba Anguissola (c. 1550), The Chess Game (1555), Boy Pinched by a Crayfish (1557), Portrait of a Lady and Madonna Nursing her Child (1588).
